The breed derives it's name from it's creator: "Leendert Saarloos" (1884-1969).

Gerard van de Fransenum and Fleur
In 1932 the Dutch Leendert Saarloos started breeding with a German shepherd “Gerard van de Fransenum” and an European she-wolf “Fleur” ( from Blijdorp zoo).
By this experiment he tried to create the ultimate work-dog, close to nature and to halt the decline of degeneration and domestication. The Saarlooswolfdog we know today is a strong, imposant dog, close to nature. But because of their wolflike characteristics( they're cautioness, reserved and lack the ferocity to attack) it is not the dog Leendert Saarloos hoped it to be. (though in the past some Saarlooswolfdogs were trained as guide dogs for the blind and rescue dogs).
In 1975 the Dutch Kennel Club recognized the breed. To honor it's creator they changed the name to "Saarlooswolfdog". (in 1981 the breed was
FCI acknowledged)
